International Competition for Opera Singers "Ferruccio
Tagliavini"
Conditions of participation:
The competition abides by the following rules:
Art. I - Eligible for application for the "Ferruccio Tagliavini" International Singing Competition, which will take place between 12th and 19th April 2012 in Deutschlandsberg (Austria), are: a) singers (either sex) of all nationalities who have evidence of a university degree or have started their career (1st section) and were born between 1 May 1979 and 30 April 1994 without exception, b) voice students (either sex) of all nationalities (2nd section) who have not yet reached heir 24th birthday (maximum) and were born between 1 May 1988 and 30 April 1995 without exception.
Art. II - Participants are asked to fill in the application forms completely, including their name, address and telephone number, and to send them to the secretariat of: Frauentalerstrasse 8, A-8530 Deutschlandsberg, Austria, by 13th March 2012 at the latest (date as per post mark or email without attachments!). To be enclosed with the application: The Attachments are accepted only by post! - two recent photographs - application form - participants are asked to use the form enclosed with the application material and fill it in completely - artistic curriculum vitae or description of course of studies - copy or photocopy of pieces of music to be performed - photocopy of an identification card (passport, personal ID, etc.) - photocopy of banker´s order of the registration fee:

If the participant fails to attend, the registration fee shall not be reimbursed. Neither shall incomplete applications be accepted.
Participants (1st section only) are asked to present themselves with a valid document at Laßnitzhaus, Deutschlandsberg, Austria, on the opening day, 10th April 2012, at 5 p. m., to attend the draw of the alphabetical order of performance. The order determined by the draw shall remain valid for the successive selections. The partecipants also are asked to present themselves to rehearsals and selektions with the copy of the pieces of music to be performed.
Art. III - SELECTION Participants of 1st section: The candidate shall present a programme of a total of 7 (seven) pieces in the original language (transpositions based on tradition are acceptable) and original pitch enclosing “recitativo and cabaletta”, where requested. a) a chamber aria from the 17th or the 18th century /or/ a song (Lied/ lirica/chanson), b) a piece from church music, either an oratorium or a cantata (Mass),
d) an additional set of 4 (four) operatic arias shall be chosen freely by the participant.
Participants of 2nd section: The candidate shall present a programme of a total of 4 (four) pieces in the original language (transpositions based on tradition are acceptable) and original pitch: a) a chamber aria from the 16th or the 18th century /or/ a song (Lied/lirica/chanson), b) 3 (three) operatic arias of the candidate´s own free choice
Art. IV - The competition will be divided into three sections:
1st section First selection: 11 and 11 April 2012, 10 a. m. - 1 p. m. and 4 - 9 p. m., at Laßnitzhaus. The candidates shall perform 3 (three) pieces from the set programme: 1) an operatic aria, 2) a chamber aria from the 17th or 18th century or a song (Lied/lirica/chanson), 3) a piece from church music, an oratorium or a cantata (Mass).
Semifinals: 13 and 14 April 2012, 10 a. m. - 1 p. m. and 4 - 9 p. m. at Laßnitzhaus.
The semifinalists shall perform 2 (two) selected pieces from the programme submitted, including a compulsory piece.
Finals (public): 17 April 2012, 7:30 p. m. at Laßnitzhaus. The finalists shall perform the remaining 2 (two) arias
2nd section: First selection: 13 April 2012, 10 a. m. - 1 p. m. and 4 - 9 p. m. at Laßnitzhaus. The candidates shall perform 2 (two) pieces chosen from the programme submitted: a) a chamber aria from the 16th or the 18th century, or a song (Lied/lirica/chanson). b) the piece indicated first in the application form Semifinals: 15 April 2012 - 10 a. m. - 1 p. m. and 4 - 9 p. m. at Laßnitzhaus. The semifinalists shall perform 2 (two) of the pieces included in the programme. Finals (public): 16 April 2012, 7:30 p. m. at Laßnitzhaus. The finalists shall perform the fourth piece of their application plus another piece to be chosen by the participant after consultation of the jury. Art. V - The candidates shall perform all pieces from memory. Art. VI - The following applies to the participants of the 1st section: First prize winners (no categories) of the last four years (2008 included) of any other international European singing competition are excused from the first round of selection. These candidates shall enclose the original diploma, the original prize or a certified copy there of with their registration material. Art. VII - Accompanying piano players shall be made available to the participants by the organizer. The candidates are entitled to being accompanied by a piano player of their personal confidence at their own cost. The piano players shall be available for rehearsals before the start of each phase. The time schedule for rehearsals shall be determined by the piano players. Under no circumstances shall intervals of 10 minutes be exceeded. Art. VIII - With the exception of the finals, selections are not open to the public. Art. IX - The jury shall consist of artists and theatre experts of international renown.
Art. X - The jury’s decisions are irrevocable and non-appealable. The rating by the jury will be as follows: in the first round of selection: yes/no; in the semifinals and the finals: scores between 1 and 10, subdivided into tenths. The jury is entitled to interrupt the performance at any time. Art. XI - The jury will be chaired by the art director of the competition who, under the precondition that he remains on the jury, can pass on the chairmanship to another member of the jury every year.
Art. XII - Members of the jury who present one of their pupils shall abstain from voting on this particular candidate. Art. XIII - At the end of the finals (1st and 2nd sections), the winners shall be announced. The prizes shall be awarded at the end of each round of finals.
Art. XIV - The following prizes (gross amount) shall be awarded:
1st section: 1st prize: / € 5.500,--, + diploma and 3 concerts see art. 19, 20, 21.
2nd prize: € 3.500,-- Prize of the city council Deutschlandsberg + diploma and 2 concerts see art. 19, 21
3rd prize: € 2.500,--, Prize of the Tourist board of Deutschlandsberg + diploma and 2 concerts see art. 19, 21. 4th prize: € 1.000,-- + diploma.
All finalists who do not win a prize shall obtain a cadeaux corresponding to the value of the stay of the last finals day.
2nd section: 1st prize: promotional prize to the value of € 2.000,-- + diplom,
2nd prize: promotional prize to the value of € 1.000,-- + diploma
3rd prize: promotional prize to the value of € 500,--+diploma
4 promotional prizes to the value of € 250,-- + diploma
A special prize to the value of € 2.200,-- courtesy of the City of Graz, shall be awarded to the best Tenor finalist (1st or 2nd section). The prize will be awarded during the concert organized from the Opera House in Graz, on 21. April 2012. The prize will be undividable.
A special prize to the value of €2.000,--, shall be awarded to the best Soprano finalist (1st or 2nd section) in memory of “Dame Joan Sutherland”. The prize will be undividable
A special prize courtesy of the Director of the “Belcanto-Academy, Rodolfo Celletti”, art director of “Festival della Valle d’Itria, Martina Franca” dr. Alberto Triola - supported by the art director of the Competition: one or more finalists (1st or 2nd section) shall be invited to frequent the “Belcanto Academy” one year at least. The invited operatic singers are allowed to participate directly the finals selections.
A special prize ”Karl Böhm” to the value of € 500,-- for the best interpretation of part of W.A. Mozart (1st or 2nd section). The prize will be undividable.
A special prize to the value of € 350,-- courtesy of the Artistic Director, shall be awarded to the best Austrian finalist who has not been awarded a prize. The prize will be undividable.
A special prize to the value of € 500,-- shall be awarded by the audience on 17th April 2012. The prize will be undividable
A special “reviewer prize” to the value of € 700,-- a special jury of reviewers from newspapers, and or/ broadcasting organisations will separately award their best finalist of the 1st section (17th April2012).
Art. XV - All prizes (also concerts and promotional prizes) are subject to legal duties.50% will be given the end of the final concert (17th April 2012) and the other 50% during the last concert in summer 2012. Art. XVI - The jury reserves the right to divide prizes between several candidates and to decline the award of a prize if the candidate does not perform on an adequate artistic level. Art. XVII - The first prize will be undividable. Art. XVIII - In the event of radio or TV broadcasts, audio or video tape recording, photographs taken during rehearsals or concerts, the candidates have no right whatsoever to claim financial redemption by the broadcasting company or the organizer of the competition. Art. XIX - The winners of the first, second and third prizes of the 1st section (including winners of divided prizes) and the Tenor prize are undertake to perform at a concert with orchestra to be organised by “Oper Graz” in collaboration with I.S.O. Deutschlandsberg (International Summer Course for Operatic Singing) in Graz, on 21st April 2012,. These prize winners participating in this concert, shall be granted a lump sum of € 350,-- as well as compensation for the stay. The operatic arias to sing in occasion of the concert, shall be chosen from the arias to check the link (ARIENAUSWAHL) and mentioned in the application form. Art. XX - The winner from the 1st section undertakes to perform at a concert or in the leading part in a concert opera in Milan, Italy. The winner shall be informed of the time and of closer details at the end of the competition. S/he shall obtain a lump sum of € 200,-- and a grant for travel expenses to the value of € 50,-- as well as compensation for the stay. Art. XXI - The winners of the first, second and third prizes of the 1st section (including winners of divided prizes have to perform at a concert to be organized by Bad Radkersburg (Austria) 14th of August 2012. S/he shall obtain a lump sum of € 450,-- as well as compensation for the stay.
More concerts for examples at Varazdin Croatia (date and performing place will be communicated in time) will be projected. Art. XXII - By registering for the competition the candidate declares to accept the conditions of participation at hand. Should only one of these conditions be violated, the candidate shall be disqualified as participation in the competition is based on complete knowledge of and consent with the information included in the invitation. hereunder shall be settled before a competent Deutschlandsberg (Austria) court of law. Art. XXIII - I. S. O. Deutschlandsberg, Austria, assumes no liability what’s o ever for damage/injuries or accidents of any kind which a candidate might endure during the competition.
